Planting Grass Seed the easy way (without breaking your back or spending a fortune on equipment that you just don't need!)

Does your garden look like this...?

Planting grass seed in a really bad garden that needs it!

If it does, it's time to get off your butt and get it sorted! It would be great if we could just throw down a load of grass seed, add a little water and hope it covers in the bald spots. However when your garden is in a right state the only real option is to dig it up and start again by planting grass seed!

Before you start planting grass seed you need to consider a few things, like is it the right time of year to plant, is the soil in the right condition i.e. is it too wet that the soil is highly compacted? Is it frozen? Trust me on this if you try to start planting your grass seeds in these conditions you will do your back in!

So, the soil is in great/ok condition (moist enough to stick together but still crumbles), now you need to select the type of grass. There are many different types of grass seed and the one to use varies depending on your local climate. For cooler climates like the United Kingdom I would recommend using Winter Rye which is hard wearing and produces a lush green lawn. If you live in warmer climates like eastern Arizona or Texas, Buffalo Grass is very good. More info on different types of grass seed.
